COTS (Committee on the Shelterless)
We have a long association with COTS, the wonderful Petaluma organization that helps the homeless and feeds the hungry. We are responsible for delivering food boxes on Saturday mornings on one of the routes. We will be helping COTS with its annual holiday celebration. Because COTS last the funding that provided staff to do this, we will help them make this happen from late November to mid-December. (Volunteers needed — contact the church office.)
We have been reaching out to support Heifer International for many years. Heifer International has a 70-year history of working around the globe to reduce hunger and poverty by providing tools of transformation to families and communities. Through these tools, including animals, trees, farming practices, and community decision making, Heifer has worked to bring trade, community, and sustainable agriculture to areas long mired in poverty, or to areas recently affected by conflict. Their focus has been on clean water, sustainable farming, empowering women, and supporting education for all. Recently our youth raised over $500 for Heifer. (See news post.)
Habitat for Humanity
We’re so excited that Habitat for Humanity has broken ground on the faith-build house that we are helping to sponsor. This house will be built in Cotati and will be home to a single mother and her kids. Habitat does such important work and we’re thrilled to partner with them in it. We hope to have a workday in the summer. Let us know if you’d like to help.
About a dozen years ago, when emergency food could not otherwise be obtained in Petaluma, members of our church started a food pantry on our church grounds. It offered groceries to people in need with No ID or proof of income required. Our pantry recently closed. Other pantries are now operating in Petaluma: on Tuesday night at the Petaluma Community Center and Thursday night at Elim Lutheran, corner of Baker and Stanley; both open at 5:30.
